  • ה׳ בֶּאֱלוּל תשע״ח

Today, I'm going to address the pesukim of the Navi נָבִיא (pronounced "navee") the Navi is a Prophet.  And we learn somethings about this coming of a Prophet that is talked about in our pesukim today:

1. He will be "like Moshe". pesuk (15)
2. He will be a Jew, from your brothers, pesuk (15)
3. He must be listened to and obeyed (15)
4. He is what B'nei Yisrael "asked for" (16)
5. Asking for Him was good in the eyes of Adonai (17)
6. He will have God's Word (all that God commands Him), in His mouth (18)
7. If B'nei Yisrael fails to obey this Prophet, we will be called to account by Adonai Himself (19)
8. Other "false prophets" will come and presume to speak in God's name, and in the name of other "gods" and they will die. (20)
9. The True Prophet will be recognized by His words coming to pass (20)
10. The false prophets' words will not be fulfilled (22)

This list of Ten Prerequisites are actually a "blueprint" for Israel to recognize who the REAL MESSIAH WILL BE!

It is basically a litnest test and Jews throughout the millennia ever since the Exodus was given this list in order that we can clearly see who the Redeemer of Israel will be.  If any man/woman does not fit any and all of these 10 requirements - then he/she is NOT THE PROPHET that Moses wrote about!

As Messianic Jews, let's see if Yeshua of Nazareth fits this test!

1. He will be "like Moshe". pesuk (15)

John 1:45 Tree of Life Version (TLV)
45 Philip finds Nathanael and tells him, “We’ve found the One that Moses in the Torah, and also the prophets, wrote about—Yeshua of Natzeret, the son of Joseph!”

Acts 7:35 “This Moses—whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who appointed you as ruler and judge?’—is the one whom God sent as both ruler and redeemer, by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to Bnei-Yisrael, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’

Hebrews 3:2 He was faithful to the One who appointed Him in His house—as was Moses also. 3 For He has been considered worthy of more glory than Moses, even as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. 5 Now Moses surely was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, for a witness of things to be spoken later. 6 But Messiah, as Son, is over God’s house—and we are His house, if we hold firm to our boldness and what we are proud to hope.

2. He will be a Jew, from your brothers, pesuk (15)

Luke 3:23 Yeshua was about thirty years old when He began his ministry. He was the son (as was supposed) of Joseph...31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz,...the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Kenan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

Matthew 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the Babylonian exile are fourteen generations, and from the Babylonian exile until the Messiah are fourteen generations.

3. He must be listened to and obeyed (15)

Matthew 28:18 Tree of Life Version (TLV)
18 And Yeshua came up to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

John 17 Yeshua spoke these things; then, lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, so the Son may glorify You. 2 Even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, so may He give eternal life to all those You have given Him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Yeshua the Messiah, the One You sent.

John 5:31 “If I testify about Myself, My witness is not valid. 32 There is another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives is true. 33 You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34 I do not receive the testimony of man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was the lamp that was burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice for a while in his light.  36 “But the testimony I have is greater than that from John. The works the Father has given Me to finish—the very works I am doing—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father who sent Me has testified concerning Me.

4. He is what B'nei Yisrael "asked for" (16)

1 Samuel 8:6 But the matter was displeasing in Samuel’s eyes when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to Adonai.

John 6 Tree of Life Version (TLV)

6 Afterwards, Yeshua went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following Him, because they were watching the signs He was performing on the sick. 3 Then Yeshua went up the mountainside and sat down there with His disciples. 4 Passover, the Jewish feast, was near....14 When the people saw the sign that Yeshua performed, they began to say, “This is most certainly the Prophet who is to come into the world!”  15 Realizing that they were about to come and seize Him by force to make Him king, Yeshua withdrew again to the mountain, Himself alone.

5. Asking for Him was good in the eyes of Adonai (17)

Matthew 3:17 Tree of Life Version (TLV)

17 And behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased!”

6. He will have God's Word (all that God commands Him), in His mouth (18)

John 12:49 For I have never spoken on My own initiative or authority, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment regarding what to say and what to speak. 50 I know that His commandment is eternal life. So the things I speak, I speak [in accordance with His exact instruction,] just as the Father has told Me.”

7. If B'nei Yisrael fails to obey this Prophet, we will be called to account by Adonai Himself (19)

John 12:47 If anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge and condemn the world [that is, to initiate the final judgment of the world], but to save the world. 48 Whoever rejects Me and refuses to accept My teachings, has one who judges him; the very word that I spoke will judge and condemn him on the last day.

John 6:36 But as I told you, you have seen Me and still you do not believe. 37 All that My Father gives Me will come to Me; and the one who comes to Me I will most certainly not cast out [I will never, never reject anyone who follows Me]. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but that I [give new life and] raise it up at the last day. 40 For this is My Father’s will and purpose, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him [as Savior] will have eternal life, and I will raise him up [from the dead] on the last day.”

8. Other "false prophets" will come and presume to speak in God's name, and in the name of other "gods" and they will die. (20)

Matthew 7:15 “Watch out for false prophets,  who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruit....19 Every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 So then, you will recognize them by their fruit.

2 Peter 2:1 Tree of Life Version (TLV)

2 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you. They will secretly bring in destructive heresies. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

9. The True Prophet will be recognized by His words coming to pass (20)

Matthew 24 Tree of Life Version (TLV)

24 Now when Yeshua went out and was going away from the Temple, His disciples came up to point out to Him the Temple buildings. 2 “Don’t you see all these?” He responded to them. “Amen, I tell you, not one stone will be left here on top of another—every one will be torn down!”

Mark 14:12 Now on the first day of matzah, when they were slaughtering the Passover lamb, Yeshua’s disciples say to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 13 He sends two of His disciples and tells them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, tell the homeowner, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” 16 The disciples went out, came to the city, and found just what Yeshua had told them. And they prepared the Passover.

Matthew 16:21 Tree of Life Version (TLV)
First Prediction: Death and Resurrection

21 From that time on, Yeshua began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and ruling kohanim and Torah scholars, and be killed, and be raised on the third day.

Matthew 17: Second Prediction: Death and Resurrection
22 Now while they were gathering in the Galilee, Yeshua said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men; 23 and they will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised.” And the disciples became greatly distressed.

Matthew 20:Third Prediction: Death and Resurrection
17 Now as Yeshua was going up to Jerusalem, He took the Twelve aside privately; and on the way he told them, 18 “Look, we’re going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the ruling kohanim and Torah scholars. They will condemn Him to death 19 and hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify. Yet on the third day, He will be raised up.”

  • NOTE: There are many other words that were fulfilled too numerous for this blog!

10. The false prophets' words will not be fulfilled (22)

Acts 5:33 On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were infuriated and wanted to put the emissaries to death. 34 But one of the members of the Sanhedrin rose to his feet, a Parush named Gamli’el, a teacher of the Torah highly respected by all the people. He ordered the men put outside for a little while 35 and then addressed the court: “Men of Isra’el, take care what you do to these people. 36 Some time ago, there was a rebellion under Todah, who claimed to be somebody special; and a number of men, maybe four hundred, rallied behind him. But upon his being put to death, his whole following was broken up and came to nothing. 37 After this, Y’hudah HaG’lili led another uprising, back at the time of the enrollment for the Roman tax; and he got some people to defect to him. But he was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 So in the present case, my advice to you is not to interfere with these people, but to leave them alone. For if this idea or this movement has a human origin, it will collapse. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them; you might even find yourselves fighting God!”

Conclusion:  YESHUA OF NAZERETH FITS ALL OF THIS CRITERIA.  YESHUA IS THE MESSIAH, THE ONE MOSES PROMISED IN DEUTERONOMY 18

Amen
